While recovering from a debilitating injury, in 2008, Vaughn met with a local Santero, Daniel Blea, a carver of religious icons famously known as Retablos. The carving of such icons is rooted in 14th Century New Mexico, a time when the Spanish Church encouraged the making of hand carved and painted religious images for church and home. This conversion and devotion practice continued over the centuries. Daniel Blea, Vaughn's mentor Santero, guided him to learn and practice traditional Retablo methods, though Daniel, being a bit of a rogue himself, encouraged Vaughn to expand the boundaries of the Retablo tradition. This guidance allowed Vaughn to explore his personal style through his selection of brilliant colors, designs, shape and incorporation of symbols. His devotional art continues to guide his hand.
Until recently, Vaughn's collection of paintings had been lovingly stored in the quartito, (the back room). Pulling over 300 paintings from his back rooms, he announced,
"It's time for the world to see the art."
A New Mexican Son
The Land of Enchantment is shaped by profound historical intersections of indigenous, hispanic, european and african cultures.
Ten generations, of these amazing cultures in both harmony and opposition existed in the shared New Mexican landscapes. As with the merging of his ancestors, so do symbols and icons surface through Vaughn's art work.
